Russia visa for Ethiopian citizens: invitation and regular route

The current official table lists exemptions for Ethiopian diplomatic and service passports, not ordinary passports. Ordinary tourism should be planned with a regular visa.

Documents to prepare for Ethiopia

This is the central official baseline for the route shown here. The responsible post depends mainly on filing location and lawful residence, not passport nationality alone.

  1. 01

    A passport with, as a general rule, two blank pages and the required validity beyond the visa end date.

  2. 02

    The official online application form, printed and signed.

  3. 03

    A 35 × 45 mm photograph; confirm the number, age and exact format with the local post.

  4. 04

    For tourism, confirmation/voucher from a registered operator or another officially accepted route for that application.

  5. 05

    Insurance, fee, appointment, lawful-residence evidence and any local additions.

Check the local list before paying and again before the appointment: photograph, insurance, filing method, fee and originals can vary. An invitation is not a visa or a decision guarantee.

For an ordinary Ethiopian passport, the current Russian route is a regular visa. Ethiopia does not appear on the unified e‑visa list. The official table’s exemption for diplomatic and service passports is a separate rule for separate documents.

Tourism in the right order

An Ethiopian tourist should identify the receiving Russian post, read its current checklist and obtain the support it accepts. The official form then uses the issuer and stay details from that support.

Keep the file aligned across:

  • passport name and number;
  • entry and exit dates;
  • city plan;
  • accommodation;
  • entries;
  • declared purpose.

Applying while resident abroad

An Ethiopian citizen resident in the Gulf, Europe, North America or another African country remains Ethiopian for e‑visa eligibility. Residence may let a local Russian post receive the regular application, but proof and minimum validity requirements can apply.

Ask before buying an invitation. A residence card can open an application desk; it cannot rewrite the passport.

Tourist, business, work or study

Tourist support is for tourism. Meetings may need a business invitation. Employment and study typically begin with the host organisation or institution. The duration alone does not decide the purpose.

Separate clocks

Invitation processing, appointment availability and consular processing are different. If an original or extra supporting record is requested, courier time becomes another clock. Build the itinerary around the full process, not the fastest advertised step.

The Ethiopian ordinary-passport answer

Expect a regular visa and confirm the accepted invitation route with the post handling the application. Use special-passport exemptions only when the traveller actually carries that special passport.

Questions people ask before they commit

Can Ethiopian citizens apply for the Russian e-visa?

Ethiopia is not on the current unified e-visa list. An ordinary Ethiopian passport normally needs a regular visa.

Are diplomatic and ordinary Ethiopian passports treated alike?

No. The current MFA table identifies an exemption for diplomatic and service passports. Ordinary tourists should not rely on it.

What should be confirmed before an invitation purchase?

Confirm the application post, actual visa category, accepted invitation format, dates and entries before providing passport data or payment.
