For most short Indian tourist and qualifying business trips, the Russian unified e‑visa is the first route to examine. India appears on the current official eligibility list. If the trip fits one entry, no more than 30 days and an approved checkpoint, an invitation is unnecessary.
Route A: unified e‑visa
An Indian citizen can consider the e‑visa when:
- travelling on the eligible passport used in the application;
- the purpose is tourism, private/guest, qualifying business or another permitted event purpose;
- one entry is enough;
- stay is 30 days or fewer;
- arrival and departure use approved checkpoints;
- passport and insurance requirements are met.
Current official rules make the e‑visa valid for 120 days from issue and limit the stay to 30 days. Validity is not a 120-day permission to remain.
No invitation for this route
The official e‑visa instructions do not require:
- Russian tourist invitation;
- hotel confirmation as proof of purpose;
- another invitation letter.
The form still asks for trip and accommodation information. Enter the real plan; “no confirmation document” does not mean “no address.”
Route B: regular visa
Look at a regular visa when:
- the stay exceeds 30 days;
- two or more entries are required;
- the purpose is work, long-term study or another category outside e‑visa scope;
- the entry point is not approved;
- individual facts require consular processing.
A regular tourist visa file commonly uses tourist confirmation and voucher from an authorised Russian host organisation. Business, work, study and private categories use different invitation routes.
Three Indian-traveller examples
Delhi → Moscow → St Petersburg, 12 days
Tourism, one entry and approved airports can fit the e‑visa. Confirm the exact airports, insurance and passport validity. No tourist invitation is needed.
Mumbai → Moscow → Almaty → Kazan, 18 days
This itinerary enters Russia twice. Indian citizenship remains eligible, but the single-entry e‑visa does not fit the journey. Review a regular route or change the border pattern.
Bengaluru engineer installing equipment for six weeks
Duration exceeds 30 days and the activity can involve work authorisation. Do not describe it as a tourist or meeting trip merely to use e‑visa. The Russian host should obtain category-specific advice.
Application timing
The current e‑visa window opens 86 days before intended entry and closes 4 days before it. The official processing rule is no more than four calendar days.
Do not wait for the final edge. Indian travel can involve multi-sector tickets, payment issues and checkpoint changes. Submit when facts are stable and leave room to solve a problem.
Passport and images
The passport must be machine-readable and currently valid for at least six months from application. Use a clear complete identity-page image and recent portrait.
Indian passports can include names, parents’ names and address information in several locations. Copy only the fields requested, from the correct identity record, and keep surname/given-name order consistent with the machine-readable page and portal instructions.
Family travel
Each child needs a separate e‑visa application. Current official instructions exempt children under six from the official fee but not from applying.
Keep a family table with a separate application ID and final document check for each traveller.
Insurance
Carry medical insurance valid in Russia for the entire stay unless an official exemption applies. Confirm territory and operational claims support rather than relying on the word “worldwide.”
Indian residence in another country
An Indian citizen living in the UAE, UK or elsewhere remains eligible based on the Indian passport. Residence may affect practical contact details and where a regular visa could be submitted, but it does not remove India from the e‑visa list.
Likewise, an Indian residence permit does not make a British or US passport eligible.
The short decision
Indian passport + permitted purpose + one entry + up to 30 days + approved points: e‑visa first.
Longer, multiple-entry, work/study or incompatible route: regular visa and the correct invitation category.
Check again immediately before submission. Country eligibility is current; travel plans have a talent for changing it indirectly.
