Kenya is one of the African passports for which the answer changed in a useful direction: a qualifying short trip can use Russia’s unified e‑visa. No tourist invitation belongs in that route.
Some ranking pages still describe the former 16-day stay and 60-day validity. The current official instructions state that the e‑visa is valid for 120 days from issuance and permits a stay of no more than 30 days. It remains single-entry.
The clean e‑visa fit
A Kenyan traveller should examine the e‑visa first when all of these are true:
- the traveller uses an eligible Kenyan passport;
- the main purpose is permitted, such as tourism, a private visit, qualifying business or an eligible event;
- one Russian entry is enough;
- the stay is 30 calendar days or fewer;
- entry and exit use approved checkpoints;
- passport, image and insurance requirements are met.
The application is made on the official MFA portal. A private assistance service can help prepare and check information, but it should not impersonate the official portal.
Dates: the useful calculation
The current filing window runs from 86 days to 4 days before intended entry. Processing is officially no more than four calendar days, with the portal’s own qualifications for corrections and submission timing.
Count the stay with both entry and exit dates in view. “Valid for 120 days” means the document can be used within that validity; it does not allow a 120-day stay.
Passport, photograph and children
The passport must be machine-readable and valid for at least six months from the application date under the current instructions. Upload a complete, sharp identity-page image and a recent portrait meeting the portal’s framing rules.
Each child needs a separate application. Current instructions exempt children under six from the government fee, not from the application itself. A family of four receives four decisions and should carry four final documents.
Nairobi to Moscow examples
Twelve days, one entry, tourism
This can fit the e‑visa if the exact airports or other checkpoints are approved. No invitation is required.
Nairobi–Moscow–Istanbul–Kazan–Nairobi
Russia is entered twice. The single-entry e‑visa does not fit even though total days inside Russia remain under 30. Review a regular visa or change the itinerary.
Six-week training programme
The duration exceeds the e‑visa stay limit, and the activity may require a study, work or business category. The Russian host should define the correct regular route.
Kenyan residence abroad
A Kenyan citizen living in the UK, UAE or France remains e‑visa eligible through the Kenyan passport. Residence is more important if the trip moves to a regular visa, because it can determine where an application is accepted.
Approved checkpoints
“Russia e‑visa” does not mean every piece of the Russian border. Verify the exact airport, rail station, port or land crossing on the live official list. A connection can change terminals or airports; use the name and code, not just the city.
When a regular visa is still needed
Use the regular route for multiple entries, stays over 30 days, work, long-term study or a checkpoint outside the approved network. Tourism commonly uses tourist confirmation and voucher; other purposes require their own invitation channel.
The Kenya answer
Permitted purpose + one entry + up to 30 days + approved point: e‑visa, no invitation.
Longer, repeated, work/study or incompatible checkpoint: regular category.
Kenya’s inclusion is good news. The practical advantage survives only if the current 30-day rule replaces the old 16-day copy in the traveller’s plan.
