Russia visa for French citizens: e-visa or regular visa?

A French ordinary passport can use the unified e-visa for one qualifying entry and up to 30 days, without an invitation. Longer or repeated trips need another route.

Documents to prepare for France

This is the central official baseline for the route shown here. The responsible post depends mainly on filing location and lawful residence, not passport nationality alone.

  1. 01

    A readable passport valid for at least six months on the application date.

  2. 02

    A recent digital portrait and passport identity-page image that meet the official portal rules.

  3. 03

    Medical insurance valid in Russia for the whole stay, unless an official exemption applies.

  4. 04

    An MFA portal application between 86 and 4 days before entry; no invitation is required.

  5. 05

    An authorised checkpoint, purpose and stay compatible with the unified e-visa.

Check the local list before paying and again before the appointment: photograph, insurance, filing method, fee and originals can vary. An invitation is not a visa or a decision guarantee.

For a French ordinary passport, a short Russian journey now often begins without a voucher. France is on the current unified e‑visa list. If the trip uses one entry, lasts no more than 30 days, has a permitted purpose and crosses an approved checkpoint, no invitation is required.

Current e‑visa essentials

  • apply on the official MFA portal;
  • file from 86 to 4 days before entry;
  • one entry;
  • validity of 120 days from issue;
  • stay of up to 30 days;
  • machine-readable passport valid at least six months from application;
  • medical insurance valid in Russia unless officially exempt;
  • separate application for every child.

Current rules replace the older 60-day/16-day limits still visible on some French and English pages.

A Paris–Moscow holiday

Ten days in Moscow and St Petersburg, one Russian entry and approved airports can fit cleanly. The traveller enters real accommodation details but does not buy an invitation as proof of purpose.

Paris–Moscow–Tbilisi–Moscow requires two Russian entries. The e‑visa does not fit the border pattern even if total stay is under 30 days.

French citizen or French resident?

A French passport opens this e‑visa route. A French residence permit alone does not.

  • Algerian passport + French residence: regular visa route under current eligibility.
  • Moroccan passport + French residence: regular visa route.
  • Kenyan passport + French residence: e‑visa eligible through Kenya.
  • South African passport + French residence: check the current visa-free route.

Residence can decide where a regular application is accepted and which residence evidence is needed.

When the regular visa returns

Use a regular category for multiple entries, more than 30 days, work, long-term study or an incompatible checkpoint. Tourism then normally needs tourist support; business, work, study and private routes use different invitations.

The France answer

For the ordinary short trip: calculate the exact dates, verify the point of entry and apply directly through the official e‑visa portal. Do not let an invitation checkout quietly turn a document you do not need into a prerequisite.

Questions people ask before they commit

Do French citizens need an invitation for Russia's e-visa?

No. France is on the current list and the official e-visa instructions do not require an invitation or hotel confirmation.

How long can a French citizen stay on the e-visa?

The current permitted stay is up to 30 days within the e-visa's 120-day validity. It is single-entry.

Does a French residence permit make a non-French citizen eligible?

No. Eligibility follows citizenship and the passport used. A resident with an Algerian or Moroccan passport follows that passport's route.
