Russian tourist paperwork has several names for a small family of documents. Providers say invitation. Consulates may say confirmation. A form may ask for a voucher number. A search result says visa support. The words overlap, but they are not all doing precisely the same job.
The quick glossary
Visa support
A broad commercial and practical term for the document package used to support a visa application. In tourism, it often means the tourist confirmation and voucher supplied together.
Invitation
Another broad term. It can refer to tourist support or to category-specific official invitation evidence for business, private, study or work visas. The exact type matters more than the friendly noun.
Tourist confirmation
Confirmation from an authorised Russian tourist host organisation that the named traveller is accepted for a stated tourist trip. Official consular guidance may specifically request this confirmation.
Tourist voucher
The tourist-service or itinerary component associated with the support. It can contain overlapping traveller, route and host details and its own identifying number.
Why two sections can look like one document
An issuer may place voucher and confirmation information:
- on two separate pages;
- on two halves of one page;
- in one combined bilingual layout;
- within a digital record printed as a single PDF.
The layout does not decide the category. Check whether the required data and issuer context are present and whether the responsible consulate accepts the format.
What not to buy twice
If a service sells “complete tourist invitation / visa support,” ask whether it includes both relevant confirmation and voucher information. Do not add a second “voucher” simply because another site uses the word as its product title.
Compare deliverables:
| Provider wording | Clarifying question |
|---|---|
| Tourist invitation | Does this include the tourist confirmation and voucher needed for my application? |
| Visa support | Which visa category and exact document format? |
| Visa voucher | Is confirmation included, and who is the authorised host? |
| Confirmation letter | Is this official tourist confirmation or merely a service cover letter? |
The number problem
The regular visa form may ask for host details, confirmation number or related reference. Copy from the final issued support and follow the form instructions; do not invent a number from the order receipt.
An order number identifies a private purchase. A document number identifies the issued support. They may be different because they serve different systems.
Where a hotel confirmation fits
A hotel booking confirmation is usually accommodation evidence, not the tour-operator confirmation used on the invitation route. The central MFA rule nevertheless permits a distinct alternative for citizens included in Government list 372-r: qualifying confirmation from accommodation in the official classification register. A generic platform receipt is not automatically that document.
Likewise, tourist support does not prove a hotel has been paid. Some application locations may request accommodation evidence in addition to invitation support. Read the checklist literally.
Business and private invitations are different
The voucher-and-confirmation vocabulary belongs mainly to tourist support. Business, private, study and work routes use other invitation concepts and channels.
If a provider offers a tourist voucher for a business application, the terms have not solved the category mismatch.
How to talk to a provider
Use this sentence:
“Please confirm the exact document supplied, the visa category, the issuing host, the identifying references and whether this format is intended for submission at [consulate or visa centre].”
That question moves the conversation from marketing nouns to a verifiable deliverable.
What to write on the application
Use the terminology and fields requested by the official application and local checklist. Copy host name, address and references exactly from the final document. Keep the purpose, dates and entries consistent.
Terminology can be flexible in conversation. Data cannot.
